Virtually every year, innocent animals like horses and calves are traumatized and die in rodeo events like those held at the Calgary Stampede. Chuckwagon races, calf-roping, bronco riding, and steer wrestling events subject animals to physical pain and psychological torment.
Sensitive horses, cows, and calves are lassoed, wrestled, or roped to the ground in inhumane bucking, wrestling and roping events. These unwilling animal participants experience pain, injuries, fear, and sometimes death.
Over 100 animals have died in Stampede rodeo events since 1986. Horses suffer heart attacks or break legs and are euthanized, and calves have bones broken as they are thrown in rope events. Under Alberta and Canadian law, it’s illegal to inflict distress and suffering onto animals, yet enforcement officials refuse to prosecute even the most obvious cases.
Please tell the Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith to stop letting horses and cows continue to suffer in illegal rodeo events. It’s time to ban rodeo in Alberta!
