The Calgary Stampede rodeo is a spectacle of trauma and violence, causing immense suffering to animals. Sensitive calves are lassoed and wrestled to the ground in inhumane roping events. Horses and bulls are jabbed with metal spurs and have cruel flank straps fastened around them in archaic bucking events. Horses suffer heart attacks or break legs and are euthanized. These unwilling animal participants experience pain, fear, injury, and sometimes death.
A young cow and three horses died at the 2024 Stampede, bringing the total to over 100 animals that have been killed in these rodeo events since 1986. Under Albertan and Canadian law, it’s illegal to inflict distress and suffering onto animals, yet enforcement officials almost always refuse to prosecute rodeo cruelty.
Many rodeo events are inherently cruel and shouldn’t be funded by major brands—yet WestJet has a two-decade long partnership with the Stampede, sponsoring many of its rodeo events over the years. Tell WestJet to STOP supporting rodeo abuse at the Calgary Stampede!
