Agricultural gag laws (or “ag gag” laws) aim to keep animal suffering on farms hidden from public view. Time and time again, ag gag laws have been struck down by courts in the United States as unconstitutional. For the first time in Canada, a judge in Ontario has struck down much of Ontario’s ag gag law for violating the right to free expression.
The tides are shifting on ag gag laws in Canada, and it’s now time for Manitoba to repeal its ag gag law. Passed under the previous Conservative government, Manitoba’s law targets peaceful protest on public property to conceal abuse and neglect of animals trucked to slaughter. NDP MLAs fought against the law when it was passed in 2021. The province’s new NDP government has an exciting opportunity to do the right thing and repeal the most problematic and unconstitutional parts of the ag gag law.
Let Manitoba’s new government know that you’re counting on them to protect farmed animals and bring the province’s law in line with the Charter.
