Canada Promised to End Cruel Animal Testing—Now It’s Time to Fund Cruelty-Free Science

Every year, more than three million animals, including dogs, monkeys, rabbits and mice are used in Canadian research, with many forced to endure brutal experiments that cause unimaginable pain and suffering. In one horrific example, Animal Justice exposed dogs suffering for months after being forced to endure hours-long heart attacks.

In 2023, after years of advocacy by Animal Justice and other animal protection groups, Canada passed Bill S-5—a groundbreaking law which includes key requirements to phase out painful toxicity tests on animals. The same year, Canada also passed a ban on testing cosmetics on animals. But despite these important developments, animals continue to suffer behind closed laboratory doors.

Because the federal government hasn’t put its money where its mouth is, Canada’s only national centre dedicated to innovative, animal-free science—the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods, CCAAM—has been forced to shut down. This a huge blow to the development of animal-free science that leaves Canada as an outlier while countries around the world invest in this important and emerging field.

Please take a moment to ask Canada to invest in the development of cutting-edge, animal-free research methods. Your voice can help save the future of Canadian animal-free science.
