Canada Promised to End Cruel Animal Testing—Now It’s Time to Fund Cruelty-Free Science

In 2023, Canada passed two important laws to reduce the number of animals used in painful experiments. In 2023, after years of advocacy by Animal Justice and other animal protection groups, Canada passed Bill S-5, which overhauled the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA), including key requirements to phase out painful toxicity tests on animals. During the last federal election, the Liberal Party of Canada committed to ending these cruel tests by 2035. Canada also passed a ban on testing cosmetics on animals.

But Canada’s ability to transition to animal-free science is now at risk because our only national centre dedicated to innovative, animal-free science–the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods, CCAAM–is at risk of permanently shutting down. Unlike similar centres around the world, the CCAAM has received no public funding to date.

Please take a moment to ask Canada to put its money where its mouth is and invest in the development of cutting-edge, animal-free research methods. Your voice can help save the future of Canadian animal-free science!
