Take Action to Ban Animal Torture Videos

The federal government recently introduced Bill C-16, the Protecting Victims Act—a wide-ranging bill targeting abuse and violence against people. The bill would also make it an offence to publish and promote photos or videos of bestiality, but it leaves out videos of animal torture.

It’s important not just to outlaw the underlying act of animal cruelty, but also aim to reduce the market for animal torture or “crush” videos. Recent charges against a Winnipeg couple who created and sold animal torture videos—including kittens, birds, rabbits, hamsters, frogs and an axolotl—illustrate the importance of closing this dangerous legal loophole. Though the perpetrators were caught in this shocking case, faces are often blurred in other torture videos, making it difficult to find those who committed the abuse.

Please urge the House of Commons Justice Committee to strengthen Bill C-16 to prohibit all animal torture videos.
