The National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) presents itself as Canada’s national authority on farm animal welfare standards. In practice, however, NFACC remains a private, industry-led body whose Codes of Practice are voluntary guidelines shaped through a process that gives the animal agriculture industry disproportionate influence over outcomes.
Canada’s farmed animal welfare system should not be dictated by the industries it is supposed to oversee. A credible system must be transparent, independently governed, grounded in science and ethics, and capable of meaningful enforcement.
Canada cannot continue falling behind while other countries strengthen protections for farmed animals and phase out and ban outdated practices.
NFACC has an opportunity to rebuild public trust by creating a system that serves the public interest—not just industry interests.
