Now, the Government of Canada has awarded nearly $42 million to a Quebec facility that will breed and use primates in disease research. Primates used in laboratories commonly endure confinement, restraint, social isolation, deliberate infection with disease and invasive procedures that cause profound fear, pain, and distress.

Canada recently passed a law aimed at phasing out painful toxicity tests on animals—but has failed to invest in a national centre for animal-free research, forcing our only centre to close.
