In a major step forward for horses, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA) has proposed a provincial ban on horse slaughter. Public concern for horse welfare was cited as the driving force behind this proposal.
Animal Justice applauds Ontario for taking the systemic cruelty of this industry seriously. In 2023, a heartbreaking investigation at a feedlot at Canada’s largest horse slaughterhouse revealed horses trapped in filthy, overcrowded conditions, suffering from severe, untreated injuries and illnesses, and forced to live alongside decomposing bodies.
Please take a moment to thank the Ontario government for this important step and show your support for the ban, either through this page or the Ministry’s online form. We’re urging Ontario to go a step further and ban the sale and transport of horses for slaughter to protect Ontario horses from being sent to slaughter elsewhere. The comment period closes on October 23, 2026.
