Canada just elected a new Parliament, and for the first time ever, the major party platforms all listed animal protection as a policy priority. Now, it’s time for our elected representatives to put words into action and make Canada a leader by bringing our outdated animal laws into the 21st century.

Congratulations on your recent success in the federal election.

I'm writing to ask you to be a strong voice for animal protection in this upcoming Parliament. As you know, all major political parties included platform policy commitments on animals during the election, and Canadians now expect action. I urge you to make the following three matters a top priority:

First, Canada should ban cosmetic animal testing and phase out toxicity tests on animals. Canada already had legislation to ban cosmetic animal testing that was supported by hundreds of thousands of Canadians, but the bill unfortunately died with the 2019 federal election. This year, the Liberal Party also promised to phase out painful, unnecessary toxicity tests on animals by 2035. I hope to see this Parliament take important steps to tackle the extreme suffering that animals endure in tests and to support modern, state-of-the-art cruelty-free alternatives.

Second, it's time for Canada to end the live export of horses for slaughter. Horses are flight animals who are especially terrified when they are shipped live to be killed and consumed in other countries. Canada’s live horse export industry also causes immense suffering by shipping large draft horse together in small crates, which results in deaths and painful injuries. Live horse exports have no place in a compassionate society.

Third, please take swift action to outlaw fur farming. Fur farming is a dying industry, with fashion designers around the world dropping fur from their lines. Fur farms only continue to operate thanks to federal and provincial subsidies. Farming animals for fur is incredibly cruel, and also risks public health. Multiple COVID-19 outbreaks have taken place on Canada’s fur farms and around the world, spreading between minks and workers, and causing the virus to mutate. The filthy and overcrowded conditions in these farms can also breed novel zoonotic viruses. British Columbia recently announced a permanent phase out of mink farms to combat these risks. The federal government should ban fur farms across the country to protect animals and the public.
